If you’re a foreign national envisioning a life in Spain as a resident, while remaining tethered to a company not located within the borders of Spain, the digital nomad visa Spain requirements could be a gateway to your dreams. This visa, developed with the modern, tech-savvy worker in mind, permits you to work remotely via computers and telecommunications systems exclusively.

And here’s a little added flexibility for all you self-starters out there. If you’re self-employed, you also carry the option to work for a Spanish company. But, keep in mind, this work should not cross more than a 20% threshold of all your professional activities.

Let’s talk about credentials next. You’ve got to come in with an undergraduate or postgraduate diploma from a reputable university, college, or business school. Alternatively, having at least three years of experience in your current field of work would be equally acceptable.

Essential documents for applicants and their dependents

Application for National Visa. This form needs to be accurately filled out and signed by each applicant or their authorized representative.
Photography. A recent, passport-sized, color photograph is required. It is advised to have a clear picture, preferably with a light background and the full facial oval clearly visible. Dark or reflective glasses, or any items obstructing the face should be avoided.
Valid passport. Yours and a photocopy of the page(s) containing biometric data are required. Ensure that the passport is valid for a minimum of one year and has at least two blank pages. Any passports issued over 10 years ago will not be acceptable. For non-British nationals, a valid residence permit in the UK is also needed.
Criminal record certificate. Persons of legal age need to submit an original and a copy of a criminal record certificate from their country(or countries) of residence for the past 2 years. Additionally, a formal declaration confirming a clean criminal record for the last five years is required. Keep in mind that this certificate can’t be more than 6 months old unless it specifies a longer validity. For UK Criminal Records, submit an ACRO Certificate.
Proof of residence in the consular district. You must also provide proof of your legal residence in the consular district. To confirm your consular district, please visit this Consulate web link.
Proof of representation. If a representative is handling your visa application, a copy of their ID or passport, along with a copy of power of attorney or other official documentation of representation must be submitted. Note that originals must be presented at the time of application. Foreign-language documents must be officially translated into Spanish and properly legalized or apostilled.
Visa fee payment. The payment of the visa fee is mandatory and done concurrently with the visa application submission. The fee must be paid in local currency and may vary due to fluctuations in exchange rates. Check out the list of Consular fees here.
Health insurance. You need to submit an original and a copy of a certificate showing you have public private or insurance health with an entity that’s authorized to operate in Spain. The policy should cover the same risks as that covered by Spain’s public health system. The S1 form and proof of registration with the Spanish National Social Security is accepted as public health insurance.

Specific requirements for international workers seeking digital nomad visa spain

Certification of working for at least 3 months (before the visa application) for a foreign Company. To this end, the applicant will submit a certificate, issued by the company and declaring: If the applicant is an employee: Length of the contract and explicit consent to work remotely in Spain. If the applicant is self-employed: Length of the contract, and the terms and conditions to work remotely in Spain
Certificate issued by the Government Companies House, declaring the date of creation of the company (or companies) and its nature of business.
Requirements for Applicants Registered with the Spanish National Social Security Should the applicant, or associated UK business, choose to enrol in the Spanish Social Security System, the following documents must be provided:
- A certificate acknowledging the company and employee’s enlistment. If the applicant is self-employed, the necessary evidence is a certificate of registration with the RETA (Régimen de Trabajadores Autónomos de la Seguridad Social española).
- A declaration of accountability by the company (if the applicant is employed) or the applicant (should they be self-employed), affirming their obligation to comply with Spanish social security mandates before commencing any occupational activity. In case the applicant remains registered with the British social security system, such status must be unequivocally stated in the declaration of accountability.
What are the financial requirements for Spain’s digital nomad visa? The main applicant is required to establish a monthly income equivalent to 200% of the minimum interprofessional wage (SMI), currently set at €2,268 (spread over 14 salary payments). The calculation of the SMI in Spain always takes into account 14 payslips per year, not 12. Consequently, with regards to 12 payslips per year, the necessary monthly income validation stands at €2,646. For dependents, the corresponding income proof is 75% of the SMI for the first additional family member (an equivalent of €850.50/month), and from the second member onward, it decreases to 25% of the SMI (€283.50/month). Applicants may also need to provide proof of a steady income. This could be through employment contracts, bank statements, or proof of business activities. The income should be regular and sufficient to support the applicant’s stay without the need for local employment.
It is incumbent upon you to provide a duplicate of your degree from an accredited university or your professional certification.

Criteria specific to family members of digital nomad visa applicants in spain

Verification documents demonstrating familial ties to the worker: these could be birth records or marriage certificates from the civil registry, certification of being registered as an unmarried duo, or any other certification proving unregistered partnership existence. Please note that the foreign documents must be either apostilled or legalized, and if required, should be accompanied by a certified Spanish translation.
For adult offspring, the requisite documents should prove both their fiscal dependency and civil status. Like the previous criterion, these foreign documents need to go through apostille or legalization procedures and if required, must be presented alongside a duly official Spanish translation.
In the scenario involving ancestors, you must provide supporting documents demonstrating they are under the applicant’s care. Here too, foreign documents must undergo apostille or legalization procedures, and when necessary, be presented with an official Spanish translation.
